PS Eye as webcam on PC

How to get PlayStation Eye (PS3) working on a Windows computer.

Here’s a simple and fairly quick (and easy) way to get your PlayStation Eye working with your Windows computer. I am not sure about compability on other platforms, may do some testing under Linux (Ubuntu) later on.

Here’s the post from the guy developing.

Installation steps:

  • Unplug the PS3Eye camera from your computer. if any
  • Uninstall any previous version of PS3Eye software. If any
  • Download and run the latest PS3EyeSetup file.
  • Click ‘Install’ and follow the setup process.
  • Plug in the camera.

Here’s the latest PS3EyeSetup file.

After the driver is successfully installed it should appear under both “AlexP Devices” and “Sound, video and game controllers” in the device manager.

To test the camera’s functionality you can execute the test application under Start > PSEye > PSEyeTest. You can also capture video by executing the AMCAP application under the same directory, this requires the Direct Show Video Source to be installed (It’s included in the PSEyeSetup).

How to delete older files and the application itself

  • Close any program that are using PS3Eye camera.
  • Press Windows Key + R on your keyboard or alternatively go to Start > Run
  • Type the following – regsvr32 /u “C:\Program Files\AlexP\PS3Eye.ax”
  • You will see the following dialog box confirming successful un-registration of the PS3Eye.ax file.
  • “DLLUnregisterServer in C:\Program Files\AlexP\PS3Eye.ax succeeded”
  • You can now safely delete PS3Eye.ax and PS3EyeLib.dll from your machine.

If this fails, try doing the same procedure under Window’s safe mode.

That’s it, you’re done and now you can enjoy your PlayStation Eye camera on your computer as well as your PlayStation 3!
